Climate change is the greatest threat to the Great Barrier Reef
June 19, 2022

98% of the Great Barrier Reef in Australia is harmed by condition known as coral bleach. Paper published in Current Biology the current condition is fourth registered since 1988. The cause for such condition are heat waves and rapid rise of the ocean water temperature as a result of global warming.

Such conditions were recorded in 2016, 2017 and 2020 and no matter there were signs of improvement  in July this year, yet the condition had manifested again. With the rise of ocean water temperature, the corals expel the symbiotic algae living in their tissue, causing them to turn completely white.

Returning in “normal” condition requires time, during which no heat waves should happen, which has proven to be almost impossible. Scientist consider the chances for survival of such eco-system on longer range, very small.

Global warming influences all segments of human life, hence such loss can prove to be irreparable. Erath’s sensitivity create conditions for global catastrophe.
