RESEARCH REPORT ON THE PERCEPTION OF CITIZENS AND REPRESENTATIVES OF LOCAL GOVERNMENT AND PUBLIC INSTITUTIONS ON ISSUES RELATED TO AIR POLLUTION IN KAVADARCI, STRUMICA, GOSTIVAR, KUMANOVO AND STRUGA

This research is prepared by TIM Institut, in collaboration with Ivana Ivanovic, PhD, Viktorija Borovska, PhD, and Pavlina Zdraveva within the project * “Scaling-up actions to tackle air pollution” implemented by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) in North Macedonia in partnership with the Ministry of Environment and Physical Planning and Municipalities of Kavadarci, Kumanovo, Gostivar, Struga and Strumica.

The first set of questions refers to information related to the air pollution in the city and the implications of polluted air on people’s health. And the topics of heating, readiness for investment and inspection supervision are also covered in the research.

The analysis of the received answers shows that in all five cities where the research was conducted the respondents more often underline that air pollution in their city is a problem.

According to the answers of the respondents, it is noted that the waste burning in illegal landfills contributes to air pollution in the cities to the greatest extent. In all other cities, industry is the second-ranking source contributing to air pollution. Transport as a source contributing to air pollution in the city was ranked as third by all respondents, followed by waste and industry.

All this points to the need to include the gender dimension, which will target the specific needs of women and the most vulnerable categories of citizens when it comes to protection from air pollution. The need for adequate information and adequate demonstration of the regularity of the process by the municipality is particularly emphasized.

The feedback from the survey network was that acceptance and general interest among respondents was quite good.
